RiversideRiverside, California
Give Riverside one full day, or two nights if you want Mount Rubidoux and the citrus park: it is a stop on the way to Palm Springs, not a base.
Riverside is California's 12th-largest city and the seat of Riverside County, about 55 mi (roughly 1 h 15 min) east of downtown Los Angeles on the CA-60. It grew on navel oranges and higher education, and its walkable core is small: the Mission Inn, three museums and a pedestrian mall sit within a few blocks. Most travellers see it as a half-day break between Los Angeles and the desert, or as a cheaper bed for the Inland Empire.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 10+ mi and buses stop around 20:00, with no night service. Riverside Transit Agency runs about 15 local routes from two hubs (Downtown Terminal and the Galleria at Tyler); route 1 on Magnolia Ave and route 16 on University Ave are the most frequent. Metrolink commuter trains serve Riverside–Downtown and Riverside–La Sierra; Amtrak's Southwest Chief calls at downtown once a day each way. Taxis gather on Fairmount Ave near the bus terminal.

Day-trips
Palm Springs
goDoor to door: About 1 h 10 min by car
Drive I-10 east, or FlixBus from UCR Lot 30
Easy add-on if you are heading to the desert anyway.
Idyllwild
goDoor to door: About 1 h 15 min
Drive CA-243 up the San Jacinto Mountains
Cooler pine forest when Riverside bakes; winding road, check conditions in winter.
Temecula
goDoor to door: About 1 h by car
Drive I-15 south, or RTA 205/206 via Corona
Wine country; a car is needed between wineries.
Door to door: 1.5–2.5 h
Metrolink from Riverside–Downtown, or drive CA-60
Doable as a day, but traffic can wreck the return; the train is the safer bet.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown / Mission Inn
The only walkable base: museums, the pedestrian mall and the Downtown Metrolink/Amtrak station are within 15 min on foot. Best for one night without a car.
University neighborhood (UCR)
Chain hotels near University Ave and the 60/215; cheaper, with bus 1 and 16 into downtown. FlixBus stops at UCR Lot 30.
Tyler / La Sierra (south)
Mall-and-freeway strip near the Galleria at Tyler and the Riverside–La Sierra Metrolink station; car-first, good for the 91 corridor.
