Give Claremont one night, not three: the walkable Village and college campuses take half a day, and it works best as a quiet base for the eastern San Gabriel Valley.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Claremont is a college town of about 35,000 people roughly 50 km east of Downtown Los Angeles, built around the Claremont Colleges and a compact downtown called the Village. Streets are lined with trees and the pace is slow. Most travellers pass through on the Metrolink San Bernardino Line or stop for a night between Los Angeles and the desert, then use it as a base for the eastern San Gabriel Valley and the foothills.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The Village and the five connected college campuses are walkable from the Metrolink station, about 10–15 min. Everything else — the botanic garden, the Alf Museum, the motels on Indian Hill — needs a car, rideshare or the local bus. Foothill Transit covers the San Gabriel Valley and runs express buses to Downtown Los Angeles; Metrolink runs hourly to LA Union Station and San Bernardino.

Watch out

Safety

Claremont is a low-crime college town and fine on foot in the Village by day or evening. The real issues are inland summer heat, wildfire smoke in the foothills in autumn, and needing a car after dark outside the centre.
  • Summer afternoons inland regularly top 35°C; plan outdoor sights before 11:00.
  • The Alf Museum sits inside a school campus: check in at the security kiosk and show photo ID.
  • Claremont station is only served by the Metrolink San Bernardino Line; last trains run before midnight, so check the timetable.
  • Rideshare from LAX at peak times can cost more than a night's hotel: compare against Metrolink via Union Station.
