Shannon exists because of its airport: a transatlantic stopover field from 1946 that grew an industrial zone and a 1960s new town beside it. The town itself is plain and walkable in an hour, with a good aviation museum and a golf course on the estuary. Its real value is as a low-stress arrival point for the west of Ireland: US-bound passengers clear US border pre-clearance here, and the coast, the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher are all within a day's drive.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes, but it is spread out and industrial, so most people drive. Bus Éireann 343 loops hourly from Limerick through Bunratty and Sixmilebridge to the town and airport; bus 51 and the faster X51 link the airport with Limerick, Ennis and Galway. There are bike racks at the airport but no bike hire in town. Taxis wait at the airport arrivals desk.

Safety

Shannon is a low-crime town and the airport area is well lit; the real risks are wet roads, unlit verges after dark and driving on the left when you have just landed.
  • Almost everything worth seeing in County Clare is outside Shannon: without a car you are dependent on hourly buses.
  • Airport food is mostly airside; groundside options are limited.
  • Rain is frequent year-round, heavier in winter: bring a waterproof shell, not an umbrella.
  • US pre-clearance means you clear US immigration in Shannon, so arrive at the airport earlier than you would for a domestic flight.
