Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
- Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.
Oldenburg is a university and cycling town of about 160,000 between Bremen and the Dutch border, with a compact pedestrian centre, a palace and a 16-hectare park beside it. It is not a headline destination: come for a relaxed day or a night on the Bremen–Netherlands route, not as a base for a week. Most travellers see the centre on foot or by rented bike in a few hours.

Getting around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Oldenburg is a cycling town: rentals downtown run about €6.50–10 per day, and VWG buses cover the rest. Buy on board for €2.90, or a 4-ride strip for €9.60, a day pass for €7.60 or a 7-day pass for €21. Public transport in the city is free on Saturdays from the start of service until the end of service.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: About 30–40 min
Direct regional train from Oldenburg Hauptbahnhof, two an hour
The obvious half-day or full-day add-on; centre is walkable from Bremen Hauptbahnhof.
Door to door: About 20 min
Regional train toward Bremen
On the way to Bremen rather than a destination in its own right.
Door to door: About 1 h 30 min–2 h
Train with a change, generally via Bremen or direct regional services
Doable as a long day; better as an overnight if you want the old town properly.
Bad Bentheim
cautionDoor to door: About 2 h
Train toward the Dutch border, change as needed
Castle and spa town; check connections, the route is not frequent.
Lingen
cautionDoor to door: About 2 h
Train south-west via Leer or Cloppenburg, change as needed
Small Emsland town; only worth it if you are already heading that way.
Nordhorn
skipDoor to door: About 2 h 30 min
Train and bus combination
Slow by public transport; a car makes it a different trip.
Wietmarschen
skipDoor to door: About 2 h 30 min+
Train and bus combination
Village-scale stop, not a day out from Oldenburg without a car.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Around the Hauptbahnhof
Best for one night with bags: trains, the ZOB long-distance bus stop and the centre are all within a 10–15 min walk.
Old town / Markt and Lange Straße
Pedestrian streets, restaurants and cafés on the doorstep; quietest at night, priciest for what you get.
Haarenstraße and Donnerschweer Straße
North of the centre, 10–15 min on foot; several of the better restaurants sit on these streets.

Watch out
Safety
- Saturday free buses and the €6.50–10 (≈ US$8–12) bike rentals are the two cheapest ways to move; confirm both locally before relying on them.
- Palace museum signage is mostly German, so the art and rooms land better if you read up first.
- The Friesen bridge damage has made Amsterdam–Oldenburg rail slow and change-heavy: check the current routing before booking.
- Crossing from the Netherlands by train at Nieuweschans: a Dutch ticket does not cover the German leg.
