Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Osnabrück is a mid-sized Lower Saxon city of about 156,000 people in a valley between the Wiehen Hills and the Teutoburg Forest, and a rail junction where the Amsterdam–Berlin and Hamburg–Cologne lines cross. Two thirds of the centre was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt close to the medieval plan, so the old town reads as a compact, walkable whole rather than a monument strip. It is the Friedensstadt, the city of peace, where part of the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated in 1648, and the birthplace of painter Felix Nussbaum and novelist Erich Maria Remarque. Most travellers pass through on the way to Hamburg, Cologne or the Netherlands; the city earns a day, not a week.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. City and regional buses run from the ZOB beside the main station; buy tickets from the driver or from machines at Neumarkt, and drivers give change. Night buses run Friday and Saturday. Bicycles are the local default on red-marked lanes, but those lanes are narrow, at street level and shared with buses and taxis, and parts of the centre ban bikes — walk the bike if unsure.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Kalkriese (Varus battle site)

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train to Bramsche, then bus or taxi to the museum

The strongest candidate for the site of the 9 CE Varus battle; museum plus a walk on the excavated embankment. Half a day.

Münster

go

Door to door: About 45 min

WestfalenBahn or regional train from Osnabrück Hbf

The other half of the Peace of Westphalia; cathedral, Prinzipalmarkt and the Picasso museum.

Bad Bentheim

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Regional train towards the Dutch border

Sandstone castle on a hill and a small spa town; easy half-day.

Oldenburg

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Regional train via Cloppenburg or Bremen

Worth it only if you are already heading north; otherwise skip.

Bielefeld

skip

Door to door: About 1 h

WestfalenBahn from Osnabrück Hbf

Sparrow's-eye view of the Teutoburg Forest from the Sparrenburg is the only real draw.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Innenstadt / Altstadt

Best for one night: cathedral, Rathaus, Große Straße and the museum quarter are all within a 15-minute walk.

Around Hauptbahnhof

Cheapest beds and the shortest walk with bags; 10–15 min on foot to the old town, buses from the ZOB next door.

Schinkel / Rosenplatz

Student and alternative bars, Bremer Brücke stadium; livelier and noisier at night.

Watch out

Safety

Osnabrück is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are bicycles on shared lanes, a few drunks around Neumarkt and Rosenplatz at night, and Monday museum closures.
  • Neumarkt and Rosenplatz are best avoided late at night.
  • Red cycle lanes are shared with buses and taxis and are genuinely risky; cyclists are killed in the city most years.
  • Some central streets ban bicycles as well as cars; police do stop riders.
  • Many museums close on Mondays — check each site before you plan the day.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Osnabrück. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep; December for the Christmas market · avoid Jan–Feb (grey, wet, few events) · month by month →
  2. 4 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for FMO: X150 timetable, last-bus cutoff and taxi fallback field-checked.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Rathaus and cathedral, museum quarter, Große Straße and Neumarkt, Schlossgarten and the station.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Felix Nussbaum Haus, Kunsthalle, Museum Industriekultur, Kalkriese) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile arrival fixtures (late train, Monday closures, rain) so gates A–D can go green.
