Osnabrück
Give Osnabrück one full day and one night: old town, cathedral, Felix Nussbaum Haus, then move on by train. Two nights only if you add Kalkriese.
Osnabrück is a mid-sized Lower Saxon city of about 156,000 people in a valley between the Wiehen Hills and the Teutoburg Forest, and a rail junction where the Amsterdam–Berlin and Hamburg–Cologne lines cross. Two thirds of the centre was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt close to the medieval plan, so the old town reads as a compact, walkable whole rather than a monument strip. It is the Friedensstadt, the city of peace, where part of the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated in 1648, and the birthplace of painter Felix Nussbaum and novelist Erich Maria Remarque. Most travellers pass through on the way to Hamburg, Cologne or the Netherlands; the city earns a day, not a week.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. City and regional buses run from the ZOB beside the main station; buy tickets from the driver or from machines at Neumarkt, and drivers give change. Night buses run Friday and Saturday. Bicycles are the local default on red-marked lanes, but those lanes are narrow, at street level and shared with buses and taxis, and parts of the centre ban bikes — walk the bike if unsure.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Neumarkt and Rosenplatz are best avoided late at night.
- Red cycle lanes are shared with buses and taxis and are genuinely risky; cyclists are killed in the city most years.
- Some central streets ban bicycles as well as cars; police do stop riders.
- Many museums close on Mondays — check each site before you plan the day.
Osnabrück is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are bicycles on shared lanes, a few drunks around Neumarkt and Rosenplatz at night, and Monday museum closures.
