Oldenburg is a university and cycling town of about 160,000 between Bremen and the Dutch border, with a compact pedestrian centre, a palace and a 16-hectare park beside it. It is not a headline destination: come for a relaxed day or a night on the Bremen–Netherlands route, not as a base for a week. Most travellers see the centre on foot or by rented bike in a few hours.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Oldenburg is a cycling town: rentals downtown run about €6.50–10 per day, and VWG buses cover the rest. Buy on board for €2.90, or a 4-ride strip for €9.60, a day pass for €7.60 or a 7-day pass for €21. Public transport in the city is free on Saturdays from the start of service until the end of service.

- The Friesen bridge damage has made Amsterdam–Oldenburg rail slow and change-heavy: check the current routing before booking.
- Crossing from the Netherlands by train at Nieuweschans: a Dutch ticket does not cover the German leg.
A calm, low-risk city; the real annoyances are bike traffic on shared paths, wet cobbles in the old town, and pickpockets only in the usual crowded market moments. Standard big-city care is enough.
