Bruges is a compact, canal-ringed medieval core that you can walk end to end in 25 minutes. It is also the most touristed square kilometre in Belgium, so timing matters more than a list of sights: sleep inside the ring, walk early and late, and treat the Markt at midday as something to pass through rather than stand in. Two nights is generous; one night plus a full day covers it.

Getting around

Walk. The historic centre is small and flat but cobbled, so wheeled suitcases are a nuisance: take a taxi from the station if you have one. De Lijn buses link the station and the centre; a shuttle bus runs from the edge of the centre for a small flat fare. Bikes rent easily but the cobbles make the ride rough.

Safety

Bruges is a low-crime city; the real risks are pickpockets in the Markt crowds, cobblestone trips, and bikes on shared paths. Standard precautions are enough.
  • Cobblestones: wear flat shoes and avoid hard-wheeled luggage.
  • Trains to and from Bruges fill at rush hour; you may stand with bags.
  • Cars and buses are not allowed inside the centre; use the edge-of-centre car parks.
  • Restaurants on the Markt and Burg charge for the view; walk two streets for better value.
