De Haan is a small Belgian coastal resort in West Flanders, built around a compact centre of white belle-époque villas and a strict low-rise rule that kept postwar towers out. The beach, the wooded dunes and the coastal tram are the main draw; the town itself is about a kilometre long and walkable in an afternoon. Most visitors come for one or two nights, or as a tram stop between Ostend and Blankenberge.

Getting around

The centre is about 1 km long and half as wide, so you walk everywhere. The coastal tram (Kusttram) links De Haan with Ostend, Blankenberge, Nieuwpoort and Knokke; De Haan has three stops, and 'De Haan aan Zee' is the one for the centre. For the inland villages (Klemskerke, Vlissegem) and the dune reserves, a bike is the practical option.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a beach resort; the real issues are cold water and currents, wind, and unlit dune paths after dark. Bike theft near the tram stops is the most common petty crime — lock properly.
  • The North Sea is cold even in August; currents and wind make swimming a short-dip activity, not a long one.
  • Many seafront restaurants and bars close or cut hours outside the season — check before you walk to a specific place.
  • Parking near the beach fills on sunny weekends; arrive before mid-morning or use the tram.
  • The coastal tram is a normal public service, not a tour: buy a ticket before boarding or use the app.
