Sluis is a small fortified town in western Zeelandic Flanders, rebuilt after 1944 bombing, 17 km from Bruges and a few km from the North Sea. Its draw is the walkable old centre, the only belfry in the Netherlands, a 1739 windmill, and Sunday shopping that pulls in Belgian day-trippers. Almost nobody needs a bed here: the coast and Bruges hold the rooms.

Getting around

The old town is flat and walkable in 20 minutes end to end. For the coast, the polders and neighbouring villages you need a bike or a car; buses are inter-city and skip the seaside. Bikes can be rented in Bruges and Knokke-Heist and carried on the train.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small Dutch town; the real risks are tide and current at the Zwin, weak mobile signal near the border, and Sunday crowds in the shopping streets.
  • Sluis is a border town: mobile signal can be weak and patchy outside the centre.
  • Zwin beach: at low tide you can wade across to Belgium through 50–80 cm of fast water, but if the tide turns you may have to walk more than 5 km around the reserve.
  • No night shops in Sluis; the nearest are in Knokke-Heist (9 km) and Maldegem (14 km).
  • The nearest Albert Heijn is in Oostburg, not in Sluis.
  • Sunday is the busiest shopping day; restaurants fill in high season, so reserve.
