Vlissingen is Zeeland's third-largest town and its maritime front door: a compact old centre behind the Koopmanshaven, a long sea boulevard, and container and cruise ships passing closer than almost anywhere else. The historic sights fit in half a day; the rest of the value is the beach, the cycling and Middelburg a short train ride away. Most travellers sleep one night here and use it as a Walcheren base.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Bikes are the best way to reach Middelburg along the canal and to ride the Walcheren peninsula; cycle paths are separated and flat. Two stations (Vlissingen and Vlissingen Souburg) sit on the Roosendaal line, with trains about every 30 min. Buses cover the rest of Walcheren.

Safety

One of the safer small Dutch towns; the real risks are wind and slippery sea walls, bicycles on shared paths, and late-night bar bills on the Bellamypark.
  • Wind and rain arrive fast off the North Sea: a jacket beats an umbrella on the boulevard.
  • The sea wall and harbour edges have no barriers in places; keep children close.
  • Bars on the Bellamypark are busy and loud late; check the bill before paying.
  • Many terraces and beach pavilions close outside the summer season.
