Zierikzee is a small historic harbour town on Schouwen-Duiveland with 568 listed monuments, three surviving city gates and the oldest still-playing carillon in the Netherlands. It has no railway station and no airport, so you arrive by bus or car. Most visitors see the centre in half a day; one night lets you add the Delta Works, the beaches at Burgh-Haamstede or the Flood Museum at Ouwerkerk.

The centre is small and flat: everything worth seeing sits within about 3 km, so walk or rent a bike (about €7.50 per day). Buses connect the bus station to Goes and the rest of the island; a car helps for beaches and the Delta Works.

Watch out

Safety

A very safe small town; the real risks are wind and rain off the water, unlit dyke paths at night, and bikes and cars on the narrow harbour streets.
  • No railway station and no nearby airport: plan the bus or drive, not the train.
  • Many museums and the tower keep short or seasonal hours outside summer — check before you go.
  • Summer weekends and the June horse market fill the centre; book beds ahead.
  • Wind and rain come in fast off the Eastern Scheldt; carry a shell even in July.
