Pacsa is a village of about 1,700 people in Zala County, first recorded in 1256 and given town status in 2009. There is no hotel and no local bus or taxi, so it works as a short stop on a Zala County drive, not as somewhere to stay. The draw is the surrounding countryside: small Baroque churches, a Renaissance castle at Egervár and the Deák birthplace at Söjtör.

Getting around

There is no local public transport and no taxi service in Pacsa. Regional buses run by Volánbusz link the villages, but for the church-and-castle loop you need a car or a bicycle. The nearest rail station is Zalaszentmihály-Pacsa, about 5 km west, with no ticket office; buy on board.

Renaissance castle from around 1560, now a hotel with a museum; the Gothic Franciscan church dates to 1511. Castle entry is a few hundred forint, seasonal hours.

Ferenc Deák, the architect of the 1867 Compromise, was born here. The museum house opens weekday mornings; the mansion is a school and seen from outside.

Safety

Pacsa is a quiet village and personal safety is not a concern. The real risks are practical: no taxi, thin bus times, unlit lanes after dark and deer or tractors on the 75 road at dusk.
  • No accommodation in Pacsa itself: book in Zalaegerszeg, Egervár or Zalaszentmihály before you arrive.
  • No taxi and no local bus: without a car, plan around the few regional bus times.
  • Village churches are usually locked outside service times; ask at the parish or accept the exterior.
  • The Egervár castle is a hotel and museum with a seasonal window, roughly April to late October: check before driving out.
