  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Mengla is a small border county town in southern Xishuangbanna, on the road between Jinghong and the Boten crossing into Laos. Travellers use it for two things: a bed before or after the border, and rainforest and botanical-garden day trips that need a car or a tour. The town itself is a market street and a bus terminal; the sights are 30–80 km out.

Getting around

Taxis and tuk-tuks cover the town for about ¥6 a hop. The train station sits about 6 km south of the bus terminal and about 9 km from the centre — arrange a ride, don't walk it. Everything outside town (rainforest parks, Yiwu, the border) needs a car, a tour or a long-distance bus.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are wet-season roads and trails, long unlit stretches outside town, and border money-changing touts. Keep to licensed taxis after dark.
  • No visa on arrival at Boten: sort your Chinese visa or visa-free entry before you travel.
  • Change money before the border; only touts and a few banks sit near the crossing.
  • Wet-season trails and rafting can close at short notice — confirm before paying.
  • English is limited outside hotels; have addresses written in Chinese.
