It replaced the 144-hour rule in December 2024, which some older pages still quote. Use the transit lane at immigration, show the onward ticket, and check the current nationality list. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan and the transport hub of southwest China, at 2,000 m altitude with mild weather all year. Most travellers use it as an arrival and departure point for Dali, Lijiang and Xishuangbanna, and give the city itself two or three nights for Green Lake, the old streets, Dianchi lake and its museums.

Metro covers the centre and both main rail stations, roughly 07:00–22:00, ¥2–10 per ride; ticket machines take paper money only. City buses are ¥2. Taxis start at ¥8 plus a ¥3 fuel surcharge, and drivers may refuse trips outside their zone. Traffic is heavy at peak times.

Watch out

Safety

Kunming is calm by big-city standards; the real risks are traffic, altitude and sun, and the rainy-season downpours.
  • Altitude is about 2,000 (≈ US$300) m: take the first day easy and use sun protection, the UV is strong.
  • Winter nights can drop near freezing and it has snowed; bring a warm layer Dec–Feb.
  • June–August is the rainy season: rain is heavy and it feels cold when wet.
  • Ignore anyone at a bus station asking for a luggage or fuel fee; the ticket price is all-in.
  • Watch bags on crowded buses, especially before Spring Festival.
