  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

White Rock is a small seaside town on Boundary Bay, ringed by Surrey on three sides and about 45 minutes south of downtown Vancouver by car. It is named for a 486-tonne boulder on the beach beside a 470 m pier, and the draw is the promenade, the sand at low tide and a strip of Marine Drive restaurants. One day covers it; a night buys you sunset and a quiet morning.

Arrive & move

Getting around

The town centre along Marine Drive is walkable but the rest of the city sits on a bluff several hundred feet above sea level, so the climb is steep. TransLink runs buses across Greater Vancouver; local routes in White Rock and South Surrey are mostly community shuttles. White Rock Centre is the main bus hub, with routes 321, 345, 351, 360, 361, 375 and 531. Route 360 is the most direct to the pier. Pay with a Compass Card, Compass Ticket or contactless credit card; cash on buses gives no change and no transfer. A car helps for South Surrey and Crescent Beach.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 45 min by car; 1.5–2 h by transit

Car via Highway 99, about 45 min; or TransLink bus to a SkyTrain station, then rail

Do it in the other direction: sleep in Vancouver and day-trip here, or come down for the day.

Surrey (Crescent Beach and Blackie Spit)

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Car west along Marine Drive/Crescent Road, or TransLink bus

Quieter sand, birdlife at Blackie Spit, restaurants on Beecher Street.

Delta, British Columbia

go

Door to door: 30–40 min

Car via Highway 99 and Highway 17

Boundary Bay and Ladner's old town pair well with a White Rock morning.

Richmond

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Car north on Highway 99, about 20–30 min

Historic fishing village and a Buddhist temple; easy add-on.

Seattle, USA

overnight

Door to door: 2–3 h plus border wait

Car south on I-5 via the Peace Arch or Pacific Highway crossing

Border queues can add an hour or more; not a same-day return.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Marine Drive waterfront

Beachfront hotels and the promenade on your doorstep; pay parking and train tracks between the road and the sand.

Uptown / Five Corners

The commercial district up the bluff: cheaper rooms, more everyday shops and restaurants, a steep walk or short drive down to the beach.

South Surrey (Crescent Beach side)

Technically Surrey, often grouped with White Rock; quieter, needs a car, restaurants cluster on Beecher Street near Blackie Spit.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, low-crime small town; the real risks are the railway tracks between Marine Drive and the beach, steep bluff streets, and cold water at high tide.
  • Train tracks run between Marine Drive and the beach: cross only at marked points and never walk or jog along the tracks. People wearing headphones have been killed by trains here.
  • Most parking is pay parking; beachside spaces off Marine Drive are the priciest (about $3.75 (≈ US$3)/hour in high season). Pay by space number and add time at any dispenser or by phone.
  • Jumping or diving off the pier is discouraged and can be dangerous.
  • The beach is tidal: at high tide the sand narrows to almost nothing.
  • Some beachfront places are cash only; carry a little cash.
