White Rock
Go for one day, not a base: beach, pier and a 2.2 km promenade, 45 min from Vancouver by car. Sleep in Vancouver unless you want a quiet waterfront night.
White Rock is a small seaside town on Boundary Bay, ringed by Surrey on three sides and about 45 minutes south of downtown Vancouver by car. It is named for a 486-tonne boulder on the beach beside a 470 m pier, and the draw is the promenade, the sand at low tide and a strip of Marine Drive restaurants. One day covers it; a night buys you sunset and a quiet morning.

Get around
The town centre along Marine Drive is walkable but the rest of the city sits on a bluff several hundred feet above sea level, so the climb is steep. TransLink runs buses across Greater Vancouver; local routes in White Rock and South Surrey are mostly community shuttles. White Rock Centre is the main bus hub, with routes 321, 345, 351, 360, 361, 375 and 531. Route 360 is the most direct to the pier. Pay with a Compass Card, Compass Ticket or contactless credit card; cash on buses gives no change and no transfer. A car helps for South Surrey and Crescent Beach.

Scams and watch-outs
- Train tracks run between Marine Drive and the beach: cross only at marked points and never walk or jog along the tracks. People wearing headphones have been killed by trains here.
- Most parking is pay parking; beachside spaces off Marine Drive are the priciest (about $3.75/hour in high season). Pay by space number and add time at any dispenser or by phone.
- Jumping or diving off the pier is discouraged and can be dangerous.
- The beach is tidal: at high tide the sand narrows to almost nothing.
- Some beachfront places are cash only; carry a little cash.
A calm, low-crime small town; the real risks are the railway tracks between Marine Drive and the beach, steep bluff streets, and cold water at high tide.
