The Potomac Highlands is 11 counties of Allegheny ridges, rivers and small towns in eastern West Virginia, with one interstate (I-81) at the eastern edge and two-lane roads everywhere else. Distances on the map lie: towns 40 km apart can take an hour. Pick one base — Davis or Thomas for the north, Elkins or Snowshoe for the centre, Marlinton for the south — and treat the rest as day drives. Fossil roadcuts, Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob and the Green Bank quiet zone are the reasons to come.

Night sequences

4 nights: Three bases, four nights, driving south on Route 219/55.

Mountain weather changes fast: a clear valley morning can be fog, rain or snow on the ridge by afternoon. High winds and light snow make drifts on exposed roads.
Do not rely on a phone for navigation in the southern counties. Carry printed maps or a standalone GPS.
Services thin out on the two-lane mountain routes; fill up and buy food when you see them.

Ridges and valleys: Summer is mild on the ridges and humid in the valleys; October leaf colour is the busiest fortnight. Winter brings snow and closed forest roads, with skiing at Snowshoe and Canaan Valley.
