Southeast Ohio is Appalachian foothill country: wooded ridges, reclaimed coal land, the Ohio River and small historic towns. It is a driving region — sights sit 30–90 minutes apart with no rail between them. Sleep in Athens for food and a walkable downtown, in Marietta for river history, or in a cabin near Hocking Hills or Burr Oak for the parks. Two to three nights covers the core; a day trip from Columbus only reaches one cluster.
