- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
The Mid-Atlantic is five states and a federal district, but the trip is really a line of cities on one rail corridor: Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York. Sleep in one or two of them and ride the corridor; save the mountains, the Chesapeake and the beaches for a separate car trip. Driving into New York or D.C. costs more in parking and nerves than the train fare.

- Rush hour on I-95 around D.C. and New York can double a drive; the train does not care.

Get in
| From | To | How | p50 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JFK / EWR / LGA (New York) | Manhattan | AirTrain + subway/LIRR, NJ Transit, or taxi | ~60–90 min door | The main international gateways for the region. |
| IAD / DCA / BWI (Washington–Baltimore) | Washington, D.C. | Metro (IAD, DCA) or MARC/Amtrak (BWI) | ~45–70 min door | BWI is the cheapest of the three for many routes. |
| PHL (Philadelphia) | Center City | SEPTA Airport Line | ~30 min | Trains run roughly every 30 min; check the last one. |
| Boston | New York | Amtrak Northeast Regional or Acela | ~4 h / 3 h 30 | Same corridor; the train beats flying city centre to city centre. |
Regional passes
Amtrak Northeast Regional
buyThe default for New York–Philadelphia–Baltimore–Washington; book early for the lowest fares.
Acela
checkOnly worth the premium if you value the time saved on a long leg; the Regional is often a third of the price.
Commuter rail (NJ Transit, SEPTA, MARC, Metro-North)
checkCheaper than Amtrak but slower and less frequent, and weekend service can be thin.
Rental car
skipSkip inside the corridor — parking in New York and D.C. is expensive. Rent only for the mountains, Chesapeake or the beaches.
Eat and move on
Regional food
| Dish | Where | Timing / trap |
|---|---|---|
| Philly cheesesteak | Philadelphia | Order with or without onions; the long-standing rivals are a short walk apart. |
| Crab cakes and steamed crabs | Baltimore and the Chesapeake | Summer is crab season; picking is messy and takes time. |
| Boardwalk fries | Jersey Shore, Ocean City (MD), Delaware beaches | Vinegar, not ketchup, is the local habit. |
| Diner breakfast | New Jersey | Open late; portions are large and coffee is refilled without asking. |
| Yuengling lager | Pennsylvania | Ordering a 'lager' in much of the state gets you this. |
