Northern Virginia is the suburban half of the Washington, D.C. metro area, and the Metro decides your trip. Arlington and Alexandria put you on the Blue, Yellow, Orange and Silver lines: the Smithsonian museums, the monuments and the airport are all a train ride away, and you can leave the car at the hotel. Push further out — Fairfax, Chantilly, Sterling, Woodbridge — and you get free parking and bigger rooms, but every D.C. day starts with a drive into the worst traffic in the country. Two nights covers Arlington, Alexandria and Mount Vernon; add a third for the Udvar-Hazy air museum or a Civil War battlefield.
