Overview
Oranjestad is one very small town split into a hill (Upper Town) and a shore (Lower Town), with an airport a few minutes away and a dormant volcano at its edge. There is no public transport plan, so a guesthouse pickup, a hired car or a scooter joins the four areas. Weather and the small-plane connection through Sint Maarten decide whether the trip runs on time.

- Divers and snorkellers
- Hikers and history readers
- Travellers who like very quiet islands
Does not fit

- Don't confuse
- Statia is the island's everyday name for Sint Eustatius; Oranjestad is its only town. The Oranjestad on Aruba is a different place.

- US$55–110 excl. bed / day
- High
- US$110+ excl. bed / day
- IC card
- No transit card: guesthouse pickups, taxis, a hired car or scooter and walking.
- Cash rule
- The currency is the US dollar. Bring cash: cards work in some places only, and machines are few and can be empty.
Arrive
EUX to Upper Town: one pre-arranged pickup or airport taxi, 5–15 minutes — the risk is a small-plane connection from Sint Maarten that runs late or is cancelled, not the ride.
Move
- Default
- Walk inside the Upper Town or Lower Town by day; a taxi, hired car or scooter between areas and to The Quill.
- Passes
- No pass. Agree taxi fares before you get in; hire a car or scooter for several days.
- Last trains
- No rail or bus. Taxis are few after dark: ask the guesthouse to book the ride back before you go out.

Luggage
Rule
- Lockers
- No public lockers; guesthouses hold bags after check-out.
- Forwarding
- No forwarding culture; keep the big bag at the guesthouse.
- Dead zone
- Late flights: ask the guesthouse to hold bags and to give you a room to shower.
Essentials and accessEssentials
Essentials
- Paying
- Cash in US dollars for taxis, small shops and guesthouses; cards in some restaurants and dive shops. Ask before you rely on a card.
- Tipping
- Round up for drivers and guides; a service charge is sometimes added in restaurants.
- SIM & data
- Install an eSIM before you fly; local coverage is patchy on the far side of the island.
- Plugs & power
- 110–120 V; US-style two-pin sockets (types A and B).
- Drinking water
- Tap water is safe but many guesthouses provide bottled or filtered water.
- Opening hours
- Shops and restaurants close early and many are closed on Sunday. Check each place before you walk.
- Health

Days
The fort and the ruins in the morning, The Quill at first light on the second day, the shore on the last; every long leg is a car, and the last day ends with the bag already in it.
Places
Go in the morning: the fort has cannons on a cliff over the bay, little shade and a view of the Lower Town and neighbouring islands.
Go at first light: the crater trail is steep and takes about three hours round trip, and the rainforest inside is best before the heat and afternoon cloud.
Eat
Walk-in dinner at the small restaurants by the bay; go early, phone ahead, carry US cash and book a ride home.
Sleep
Diver's base: the dive shops and restaurants are a short walk; a short car ride from the fort and The Quill.
Desk: unknown
First-timers: the fort and the ruins are a short walk; ask the guesthouse for a car pickup and the return ride to the airport.

Survive
Safety
- Petty crime is low, but do not leave valuables on the beach or in a car.
- Heat and sun: shade and water every 60–90 minutes.
- Medical care is basic: carry insurance with evacuation cover, especially if you dive. Do not fly within 24 hours after diving.
- Emergency: 112 (confirm the local numbers with your host on arrival).
Red lines
- Dive and snorkel only with licensed operators and follow marine park rules and fees.
- Do not remove anything from the ruins or the sea floor.
- Ask before photographing people.
Practical
- Toilets: guesthouses, cafés and the dive shops.
- Tap water is supplied by desalination; many visitors still drink bottled water.
