Northern Norway is half of Norway's land area with about 10% of its people, and the E6 runs roughly 1,700 km through it. Distances are the whole story: Bodø to Tromsø is a flight or a long day's drive, not a side trip. Choose one base per trip — Tromsø for auroras and city comforts, Lofoten for peaks and fishing villages, Finnmark for the North Cape and the Sami heartland — and add a second only if you have a week or more.

- Trying Tromsø + Lofoten + North Cape in five days means three of those days are mostly transport.
- In winter there is little or no daylight; plan activities around a short window and treat mountain-pass driving as serious.
- The one overland border crossing with Russia, near Kirkenes, is a Schengen border and can only be crossed in a vehicle, not on foot; check the current situation before planning around it.
