Svalbard is a High Arctic archipelago, not a normal destination: fewer than 3,000 residents, no roads between settlements, and about 60% of the land under glacier. Almost everyone flies into Longyearbyen and stays there, taking guided boat, snowmobile or hiking trips. You cannot walk out of town without a rifle and polar-bear awareness, so the trip is really a choice of season and a choice of tours. Go in Mar–May for snow, light and northern lights, or Jun–Aug for midnight sun and boat access.
