Oslo and Eastern Norway
Sleep in Oslo for two or three nights; fjord-island ferries and Holmenkollen are half-day trips, and Bergen or the fjords are a separate leg by the scenic railway.
Rules in force · 3
- Norway ↗Norway is not in the EU but is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources.
- Norway ↗Wine and spirits are sold only at the state Vinmonopolet shops; supermarkets sell beer, and not in the evenings or on Sundays.
- Norway ↗The right to roam (allemannsretten) lets you hike and camp on most uncultivated land, keeping a distance from homes and leaving no trace.
Eastern Norway is one base and a few short trips. Oslo's sights are close together and a single transit ticket covers the ferries, so keep one bed and use half days; the big journeys north and west (Bergen, Flåm) are a full day on the train, not an add-on.
Where to sleep
Harbour, museums and the Opera House on foot and by tram.
Olympic town by train; about 2 h each way.
Scenic railway; about 7 h each way.
