Lillehammer is a small lakeside town 2 hours by train from Oslo, known for the 1994 Winter Olympics and a preserved wooden centre. Two nights covers the museums, the Lysgårdsbakkene ski jump and a lake or valley day. It works as a stop on the Oslo–Trondheim line or as a winter sports base.

Getting around

Central Lillehammer is small enough to walk: station to Storgata is two blocks. Regional buses leave from outside the train station; buy tickets on the Entur app or from the driver, card accepted. The ski jump is a 20–30 min uphill walk from the centre or a short bus ride.

Watch out

Safety

Lillehammer is a low-crime small town and safe to walk by day and evening. The real risks are winter ice on pavements, cold and dark on hikes, and slippery ski slopes: dress for the season and check trail conditions.
  • The ski jump site is an uphill walk from town: allow 20–30 min each way or take the bus.
  • Winter roads and the E6 can be slippery and slow; plan extra time if driving.
  • Many sights and the Skibladner run only in summer: check dates before you book around them.
  • The tourist office in the station building has limited weekend hours; Sundays closed outside summer.
