Hamar sits on Lake Mjøsa, 1 h 15 min by train from Oslo and about an hour from Gardermoen airport, on the line to Lillehammer and Trondheim. It hosted speed skating, figure skating and short track at the 1994 Winter Olympics. The sights are two clusters along the lake shore, so a single night or a half-day stop covers it; skiers use it as a gateway to Trysil.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to Domkirkeodden is about 3 km along the lake, or city bus 1. Five local bus lines cross the centre; a single ticket bought on board is about 33 kr. Taxis are expensive — minimum fare from about 97 kr, higher late on weekend nights. Trains run to Oslo, Gardermoen, Lillehammer, Elverum and Trondheim.

Safety

Hamar is a low-risk Norwegian town; the real issues are winter ice, cold lake evenings and high taxi minimums. Emergency numbers are 112 police, 113 ambulance, 110 fire.
  • Museum opening hours change by season and some close on Mondays: check each site before you go.
  • Evenings by the lake are cold even in summer — bring a layer for outdoor concerts at Domkirkeodden.
  • Taxis have a high minimum charge and a late-night weekend surcharge: ask the price before you get in.
  • Winter pavements are icy; the lake is not safe to walk on unless locals say so.
