Western Norway is the fjord coast: Bergen is the transport hub and the only city where you can sleep, eat and leave by train or boat without a car. The fjords themselves — Nærøyfjord, Geiranger, Hardanger — are 2–5 hours from Bergen by boat, bus or a rented car, and each one is a separate trip. Pick one fjord arm and go deep rather than ticking off three.

Bergen–Stavanger is about 5 h by express bus or a short flight; do not plan it as a day-trip.
Fjord ferries and express boats thin out in the evening; the last boat back can be mid-afternoon in shoulder season.
Rented boats: every year visitors drown in small boats after going out in bad weather. Check the forecast and stay in sheltered water.
Many mountain roads are single-lane with passing places; add time and do not rush blind corners.
