The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is a US territory: US immigration rules have applied since 2009, with the same Guam–CNMI Visa Waiver Program for some nationalities. Almost all visitors stay on Saipan; Tinian and Rota are quieter. Typhoons, notably Yutu in 2018, are the main risk, mostly from July to November.

  • Second World War sites (Banzai Cliff, Tinian's North Field) are memorials; do not remove relics or climb on structures.

Safety

  • Emergency: 911 for police, fire and ambulance.
  • Rip currents off the east coasts: swim on the sheltered west-side lagoon beaches.
  • Typhoons (mainly Jul–Nov): follow official warnings; flights stop during storms.
  • Unexploded wartime ordnance is still found in the jungle; stay on paths.
  • Grotto and cliff sites have strong surges; do not dive or swim there without a guide.

Saipan is a short flight from Guam, the air hub for the rest of Micronesia.
