Northeast New Mexico is the empty quarter of the state: high plains, old volcanoes, two national monuments and a handful of small towns strung along I-25 and I-40. It is not a place to build a trip around. It is a good place to break the drive between Texas or Colorado and Santa Fe or Taos — one night in Las Vegas or Raton, a half-day at Capulin or Fort Union, and you have seen it. Anyone expecting Santa Fe-level sights will be disappointed; anyone crossing the plains with a car will be glad of the stops.
