Layover in Nairobi: what to do

Yes, if you have the right entry document and enough time. NBO is about 20 km southeast of central Nairobi, and traffic on Mombasa Road can turn that into 90 minutes in rush hour. Immigration at NBO can also be slow, so budget 60–90 minutes to clear on arrival and 2 hours to check in and clear security for your onward flight.

A practical rule: leave the airport only if your layover is at least 6 hours and you arrive before 20:00. Under 5 hours, or a late-night arrival, stay in the terminal or at an airport hotel. If your onward flight is a domestic safari connection from Wilson Airport, note that Wilson is on the other side of the city — allow 2 hours to transfer between the two airports.

Kenya moved to an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) system. Most visitors, including transit passengers who want to leave the airport, need an approved eTA before boarding. Apply online at least a week before you fly. Some nationalities are exempt or need a different document — check the official Kenyan government eTA portal and your own government's travel advice before booking.

If you stay airside and do not pass immigration, you normally do not need an eTA. But if you leave the terminal, you do. Carry a printed copy of your eTA approval and your onward ticket.

NBO has limited left-luggage facilities. Check with your airline or the airport information desk on arrival; do not assume storage is available. If you are on a single through-ticket, your checked bags usually go straight to the final destination, so you only carry hand luggage into the city.

If you need to store bags, a day room at an airport hotel or a hotel in the city centre is often the simplest solution — many will hold bags for a few hours for a small fee. Keep passports, cash and electronics with you.

Taxis and ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt) are the standard options. From NBO to the city centre is about 20 km and takes 45–90 minutes depending on traffic. Expect KES 1,500–2,500 (2026 estimate) for a taxi or ride-hail; agree the fare or use the app before you get in. Street taxis at the airport may quote higher — walk to the official taxi rank or use the app.

There is no train or metro from NBO to the city. Matatus run along Mombasa Road but are not recommended with luggage on a tight layover. For the return, leave the city at least 3 hours before your onward departure to allow for traffic and security.

Six hours: stay close. A short game drive in Nairobi National Park is the best use of a 6-hour layover — the park gate is about 10 km from NBO and you can see rhino, giraffe and zebra against the skyline. Book a driver in advance; a 2–3 hour drive plus transfers fits if traffic behaves. Alternatively, take a day room at an airport hotel and rest.

Twelve hours: you can reach the city. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage (open to the public for a morning visit, book ahead) and the Giraffe Centre in Karen are the classic short stops. Add lunch at a mall in Westlands or Karen, then head back. Do not try to combine too many stops — Nairobi distances are deceptive.

Twenty-four hours: a full day is realistic. Consider the Nairobi National Museum, the Karen Blixen Museum, or a day trip toward Kiambu or the Rift Valley escarpment. If you have a full 24 hours and an early onward flight, an airport hotel for the night is safer than a city hotel.
