Mexico in October: what to expect

October is the tail of the rainy season. In the central highlands — Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato — the pattern is typical of May–October: clear, sunny mornings, then afternoon or evening showers that usually pass within an hour or two. Rain totals drop through the month, and the countryside is at its greenest. Days are mild, nights are cool, and the highlands are the most comfortable part of the country this month.

The Yucatán and the Caribbean coast stay hot and humid, with rain most likely in the afternoon and evening. October still sits inside the June–November hurricane season, so the risk of a storm disrupting a beach trip is real, even if it is lower than in September. The Pacific coast — Puerto Vallarta, the Oaxaca coast, Los Cabos — is also still wet, and September is the wettest month of the year there; October is a transition month that improves noticeably in the second half.

The north and Baja are the exception: desert and mountain areas are drying out and October is one of the best months for Chihuahua, the Copper Canyon and Baja California, with warm days and cool nights.

October is one of the quietest months of the Mexican travel year. Domestic travel is low between the September Independence Day break and Día de Muertos at the start of November, and most foreign visitors wait for the dry season. Beaches, archaeological sites and colonial cities are noticeably calmer than in December–April.

Prices follow the crowds. Flights, hotels and tours are at their cheapest for the autumn, and you can often book popular places in Oaxaca or Mexico City at short notice. The main exception is the last days of the month, when travellers arriving early for Día de Muertos begin to fill Oaxaca, Pátzcuaro and Mexico City — if your trip overlaps 1–2 November, book accommodation well ahead.

October is a quiet month for national festivals, but a few dates matter for planning.

12 October, Día de la Raza, is a public holiday marking the meeting of European and Indigenous cultures. It is not a big travel event, but banks and some offices close, and long-weekend traffic picks up on roads out of the big cities.

The bigger story is what happens at the end of the month. Preparations for Día de Muertos (1–2 November) begin in the last week of October: markets fill with marigolds, sugar skulls and papel picado, and altars start appearing in Oaxaca, Pátzcuaro, Mexico City and many towns. If you want to see the build-up without the peak crowds, late October is a good compromise — but book Oaxaca and Pátzcuaro accommodation months ahead.

Local and regional fairs also run through the month; dates change yearly, so check the tourism office for the state you are visiting.

The highlands are the safest bet. Mexico City is mild and often sunny in the mornings, with the usual afternoon shower; museums, markets and day trips to Puebla, Taxco or the pyramids work well. Oaxaca and Guanajuato are green and comfortable, and Oaxaca in particular is gearing up for Día de Muertos by the end of the month.

For beaches, aim for the second half of October and stay flexible. The Caribbean coast (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Holbox) is hot and humid with rain possible, and sargassum seaweed is usually easing but can still be present. The Pacific coast is similar: Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán and the Oaxaca coast are wet early in the month and better later. Los Cabos and Baja California are drier and a good choice for October.

The north is underrated this month: Chihuahua, the Copper Canyon and the Baja Peninsula are drying out, with warm days and cool nights, and October–November is one of the best windows for the Copper Canyon. If you want a city-and-culture trip with low crowds, Mexico City plus Oaxaca or Guanajuato is the strongest October plan.

Pack for two climates if you are combining the highlands and a beach. In the highlands, layers matter: mild days, cool evenings and cold nights, plus a compact rain jacket or umbrella for the afternoon showers. Comfortable walking shoes handle cobblestones and archaeological sites better than sandals.

For the coast, bring light, quick-drying clothes, swimwear, sun protection and mosquito repellent — the wet season means more mosquitoes, especially around dusk. A small dry bag or waterproof phone pouch is useful for boat trips and sudden rain. If you are heading to the highlands, add a warm layer for the evening and a hat for strong midday sun at altitude.

Practical items: a refillable water bottle, a power bank for long travel days, and travel insurance that covers weather disruption if you are visiting the coasts during hurricane season.

If October does not fit, the months either side behave differently. September is the peak of the hurricane season on both coasts and the wettest month on the Pacific — the site's country data rates it avoid. November is a strong month: the dry season starts, the highlands are clear and sunny, and Día de Muertos (1–2 November) is one of Mexico's biggest travel events, which means Oaxaca and Pátzcuaro need booking months ahead.

December brings dry, clear weather and the Christmas peak on the coasts, with high prices and full hotels. If you want the highlands without the crowds, October is the quieter choice; if you want reliable beach weather, wait for November or later.
