Mexico in December: what to expect

December is the first full month of Mexico's dry season, and it is one of the most reliable months of the year for clear skies. The rains have ended almost everywhere, hurricane season is over, and the pattern is stable: sunny mornings, dry afternoons, cool nights.

The main split is altitude, not latitude. In the central highlands — Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato — days are mild and bright but nights get genuinely cold, with temperatures near 5 °C in December and January. Coastal and lowland areas stay warm day and night, and the Caribbean coast is at its best before the spring heat and summer seaweed arrive.

The north and Baja are cooler and drier; the Copper Canyon can see snow some winters, so check conditions before committing to a trek there.

December is peak season: the country facts rate crowds and prices high for the month, and the Christmas and New Year stretch is the busiest part of it. Beach destinations — Cancún, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta — fill up and charge their holiday rates.

The highlands are less extreme. Mexico City, Oaxaca and Guanajuato stay busy but you can usually still find rooms, and prices are lower than on the coast. If your dates are fixed to the Christmas week and your budget is tight, the highlands are the better value.

Book flights and beach accommodation well ahead for the Christmas period. Domestic flights and long-distance buses also fill in the last week of December, so lock in intercity legs early.

The month's biggest event is the Guadalupe pilgrimage around 12 December, when pilgrims travel to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Expect huge crowds around the basilica and on approach roads for several days; it is a remarkable thing to see, but plan around the transport disruption.

Christmas and New Year are the other fixed points of the month: coastal resorts run their own holiday programmes and Mexico City's streets and plazas are decorated through December. Dates for local processions and town festivals vary, so check locally.

The highlands are at their best: Mexico City, Oaxaca, Puebla, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende all offer dry, sunny days and cold, clear nights. This is also a good month for archaeology — Teotihuacán, Monte Albán and the Yucatán sites are far more comfortable than in the spring heat.

The Caribbean coast is in its prime window: dry, warm and free of the summer sargassum, which makes December one of the best months for Cancún, Tulum, Isla Mujeres and Bacalar. The Pacific coast is dry and warm too, and whale watching on the Pacific and in Baja runs December–March, so it is underway this month.

The north and Copper Canyon are dry but cold, with possible snow in the canyon; if you want the canyon at its best, aim for March–May or October–November instead.

Pack for two climates if you are combining the highlands and the coast. For the highlands: layers, a warm jacket for evenings, and something windproof — December nights near 5 °C feel colder than the number suggests. For the coast: light clothing, swimwear, sun protection and mosquito repellent, since the evenings are warm and humid in the Yucatán.

Bring comfortable walking shoes for cobbled colonial towns and archaeological sites, a refillable water bottle, and a universal adapter. If you are travelling over Christmas, pack any prescription medicine you need — pharmacies are open but some small shops close for the holidays.

November is similar but slightly warmer and less crowded, with Día de Muertos at the start of the month — book Oaxaca and Pátzcuaro months ahead if that is your plan. January continues the dry season with the same cold highland nights and high coastal prices.

February stays dry and warm, with Carnival in Veracruz and Mazatlán towards the end of the month. If you want the same weather as December with fewer people, late January and February are the sweet spot.
