Jamaica
The best food and drink experiences in Jamaica
Eat jerk pork at Boston Bay and fish in Negril if you have 5–7 days on the north coast; add Kingston for patties, curry goat and Devon House ice cream, and the south coast for pepper shrimp. Base once, drive between food stops, and go between December and April for dry roads.

Our top picks
Jamaica's food map follows the island's geography: jerk and seafood on the north and east coasts, patties and cook shops in Kingston, pepper shrimp and rum on the south. These are the stops worth building a day around, ranked by how much they change a trip rather than by fame.
- Boston Bay jerk pork, Portland — the Maroon original, cooked over pimento wood; order by weight at the counter.
- Negril fish and bammy — fried snapper and escovitch along the west end and Norman Manley Boulevard.
- Kingston cook shops and patty shops — curry goat, oxtail, beef patty, then Devon House ice cream.
- Middle Quarters pepper shrimp, St Elizabeth — river shrimp boiled with scotch bonnet, sold from roadside stalls.
- Falmouth and Trelawny — jerk centres and a rum estate tour in the same day.
- Ocho Rios — seafood and jerk within a short drive of the cruise port and north-coast hotels.
- Blue Mountain coffee — a Kingston or Blue Mountains roaster visit, not a gift-shop bag.
- Ital and Rastafari cook shops — plant-based stews in coconut milk, easy to find island-wide.

How we chose
We picked stops that are specific to Jamaica and that a traveller can actually reach on a normal trip: dishes named in the country food guide, tied to a place where they are made well, and reachable from a north-coast base or Kingston without a full day of driving. Resort buffets were left out even when convenient, because the same dishes cost less and taste better at the source.
Each pick had to pass three tests: it is a Jamaican dish or drink rather than a generic restaurant, there is a clear time of day or season to go, and the cost is knowable before you arrive. Where a price or opening time could not be confirmed, we marked it check rather than guess.
| Criterion | What we looked for |
|---|---|
| Place-specific | Tied to a parish or town, not just 'Jamaica' |
| Reachable | Within a day trip of a north-coast base or Kingston |
| Time-bound | A clear best hour or season |
| Cost-known | A price band you can plan around |
| Local-first | Cook shops, jerk centres and roadside stalls over resort dining |
Best time
December to April is the dry season and the easiest window: roads to Boston Bay, Middle Quarters and the Blue Mountains are at their best, and outdoor jerk pits run every day. June to November is hurricane season, and 2026 in particular needs a check on whether western hotels have reopened after Hurricane Melissa.
Food timing matters as much as weather. Jerk centres fire up from late morning and sell out; cook shops peak at weekday lunch; Sunday is curry goat and rice-and-peas day across the island. If you want a rum estate tour, book ahead and go on a weekday.
| Month | What it means for food travel |
|---|---|
| December–April | Dry season; best roads and full outdoor cooking |
| May | Shoulder; hot, some afternoon rain |
| June–November | Hurricane season; check openings and road conditions |
| Sunday | Curry goat and rice and peas at cook shops |
| Weekday lunch | Cook shops and patty shops at their busiest |
Getting there
Most travellers land at Kingston Norman Manley (KIN) or Montego Bay. From Montego Bay, Negril is roughly 1.5–2 hours by road and Ocho Rios about 1.5 hours; Falmouth sits between them. Boston Bay and Portland are a long drive from the north-coast resorts, so pair them with a Kingston or east-coast stay rather than a day trip from Negril.
A rental car or a hired driver makes the food stops practical, because jerk centres and pepper shrimp stalls sit off the main highway with limited bus service. Driving is on the left. Allow more time than the distance suggests: north-coast roads are slow and mountain routes are slower.
| From | To | Rough drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Montego Bay | Negril | 1.5–2 hours |
| Montego Bay | Falmouth | 45–60 minutes |
| Montego Bay | Ocho Rios | 1.5 hours |
| Kingston | Boston Bay, Portland | 2.5–3 hours |
| Kingston | Middle Quarters, St Elizabeth | 2–2.5 hours |
Times are estimates for planning; traffic in and around Kingston and Montego Bay adds time.
Map
The food stops cluster in three zones: the north coast (Montego Bay, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Negril), the east (Boston Bay and Portland), and the south and centre (Kingston, Blue Mountains, Middle Quarters, rum estates). Pick one zone per day and do not try to cross the island for a single meal.
- North coast: Negril, Montego Bay, Falmouth, Ocho Rios
- East: Boston Bay, Portland
- South and centre: Kingston, Blue Mountains, Middle Quarters, Trelawny rum estates
| Zone | Base | Food focus |
|---|---|---|
| North coast | Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios | Fish, bammy, escovitch, jerk |
| East | Portland | Boston Bay jerk pork |
| South and centre | Kingston | Patties, cook shops, pepper shrimp, rum, coffee |

Order by weight — a quarter or half — at the counter, and ask for scotch bonnet sauce on the side. Jerk pork is the Portland specialty; chicken is everywhere.
