The best small towns and villages in Jamaica

Jamaica's small towns are not interchangeable. The north-east is wet and green, the south coast is dry and slow, and the old north-coast ports sit on the highway between the airports and the resorts. Pick by what you want to do in the morning, then check the drive.

We kept places that are genuinely small — a village or a town you can walk in an afternoon — and that give you a reason to sleep there rather than pass through. Each pick has something to do in the morning and something to eat at night, and sits within a reasonable drive of a main road or an airport transfer.

We weighted access: a town three hours down a rough road only makes the list if the payoff is high, and we flag where storm recovery is still uncertain. We left out resort strips and places that are really a beach with a car park. Prices are 2026 estimates for a mid-range double room in high season; they move with the season and with how much of the west has reopened.

December to April is the dry season and the easiest window: less rain, more reliable roads, and the north-east at its best. January to April suits Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains in particular. Expect higher room rates over Christmas, New Year and Easter.

May to June and November are quieter and cheaper, with afternoon showers. July to October is hurricane season; this is when you check forecasts, buy flexible tickets and confirm your hotel is open. The south coast around Treasure Beach and Black River is drier than the north-east for much of the year, but it was hit hard in 2025 — confirm before booking.

Most visitors land at Montego Bay (MBJ) and reach the north-coast towns by road. Falmouth is about 30–40 minutes east of MBJ; Ocho Rios about 1.5–2 hours; Port Antonio about 3–3.5 hours from MBJ or roughly 2.5 hours from Kingston. Kingston's Norman Manley airport (KIN) is the better arrival for the Blue Mountains, Port Royal and the south coast.

Knutsford Express runs scheduled coaches on the main corridors and is the cheapest comfortable option; private transfers cost more but go door to door. Drive only in daylight — the roads are narrow, unlit and full of potholes in places. For Treasure Beach and Black River, plan a long transfer day or break the journey in Mandeville.
