Best places to visit in Jamaica: top cities, regions and sights

Jamaica is small on the map and slow on the road. A 90 km hop between bases can take two hours or more, so the choice of where to sleep matters more than the list of sights. Pick one coast for the beach half of the trip and one inland or city base for the other half.

Negril suits travellers who want the water: Seven Mile Beach for swimming, the West End cliffs for sunsets and snorkelling. Montego Bay is the easiest arrival — most international flights land at MBJ — with the Hip Strip and a resort belt, and it is the shortest transfer to Negril or Ocho Rios. Ocho Rios puts Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Hole and river trips within a short drive, which is why it works for families and cruise-day sightseeing.

Kingston is the other Jamaica: the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road, Devon House, the National Gallery downtown, Emancipation Park and Hope Botanical Gardens, plus the road up into the Blue Mountains for coffee farms and hiking. Port Antonio, on the lush north-east coast, is for rafting on the Rio Grande, the Blue Lagoon and Frenchman's Cove. Treasure Beach, on the south coast, is the slowest option — fishing villages, no high-rise strip — and its recovery after the hurricane needs checking before you commit.

In Kingston, the Bob Marley Museum and Devon House sit on Hope Road within a short drive of each other, and the National Gallery of Jamaica downtown is best done by day with a driver or guide. Emancipation Park in New Kingston and Hope Botanical Gardens are easy, low-cost stops.

On the north coast, Dunn's River Falls near Ocho Rios and the Blue Hole (Island Gully Falls) in the hills are the headline water stops; both are busiest on cruise-ship days, so go early on a non-cruise morning. YS Falls in St Elizabeth pairs well with the south coast. Near Port Antonio, Rio Grande rafting is the classic half-day.

For heritage, Rose Hall Great House outside Montego Bay, Port Royal on Kingston harbour, and the Maroon town of Accompong in St Elizabeth are the anchors. Accompong's Maroon festival falls on 6 January.

Seven days covers one beach base plus Kingston: fly into Montego Bay, spend five nights in Negril, two in Kingston, and fly home from Kingston to skip the drive back. Ten days adds the north-east and the mountains: Montego Bay in, then Ocho Rios, Port Antonio, the Blue Mountains and Kingston, flying out of KIN.

Fourteen days allows a full circuit — Negril, Treasure Beach, Kingston, the Blue Mountains, Port Antonio and Ocho Rios — but only if the south coast and Black River area are ready for visitors. Anything shorter than a week means choosing one coast and staying put.

Move between bases by Knutsford Express coach or a pre-booked private transfer, and plan to travel in daylight — mountain and coast roads are slow and poorly lit. Rental cars are possible but driving is on the left and local driving style takes getting used to.

December to April is the dry season and the most reliable window; the hurricane season runs roughly June to November, with September and October the peak risk months. Prices are highest around Christmas, New Year and spring break.

In 2026 the west is still recovering from Hurricane Melissa. Confirm that your specific hotel, and the tours you want, are open before you pay a deposit, and keep an eye on the south coast separately. Travel insurance that covers trip disruption and medical care is worth arranging before you book anything non-refundable.
