The best small towns and villages in Indonesia

These are small towns and villages where the town itself is the reason to stop, not just a bed near a bigger sight. Each pick is walkable, has a reason to stay two nights or more, and is reachable without a private car for the whole trip.

We ranked on four things: whether the town is worth two nights on its own, how easy it is to reach without hiring a car for the whole trip, whether there is a dry-season window that matches the country's main travel months, and whether the town works as a base for day trips on foot, by ojek or by short bus ride.

We left out places that are really one sight with a car park, and places where the only sensible plan is a private driver for every day. We also left out towns that are already covered as a city guide on this site, so the list stays about small places rather than second cities.

Prices are 2026 estimates for a mid-range guesthouse or small hotel; check current rates before booking. Months follow the country guide: April–October for most of Indonesia, May–September for Sumatra, October–April for Maluku and Raja Ampat.

Most of Indonesia has a dry season from April to October and a wet season from November to March. The dry months are the safe default for small towns, because the best things to do are walking, village visits and volcano viewpoints. Sumatra, including Bukittinggi and Berastagi, is driest from May to September. Maluku, including Banda Neira, runs on the opposite pattern and is best from October to April.

Two things change plans. First, Nyepi in Bali: one day in March when the island stays quiet, with no flights, no check-in and no street travel, so do not schedule a Bali arrival or departure on that day. Second, Ramadan and the Idul Fitri holiday week, when domestic travel peaks, buses and flights fill, and small-town guesthouses can be fully booked; check dates for your year.

If you only have one window, April, May, September and October give dry weather with fewer domestic crowds than July and August.

Indonesia is an archipelago, so plan on flying between islands and using trains or cars within Java. Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) is the main international gateway for Ubud and the eastern islands; Jakarta is the main hub for Sumatra and Java connections.

Ubud: about 1.5–2 hours by car from DPS depending on traffic; a private transfer is the usual choice. Bukittinggi: fly to Padang, then about 2.5–3 hours by road, or take the longer scenic route via Lake Maninjau. Bajawa: fly to Ende or Labuan Bajo, then a long road day across Flores. Rantepao: fly to Makassar, then about 8 hours by road or an overnight bus. Berastagi: about 2–2.5 hours by road from Medan. Wonosobo: train or bus to Yogyakarta or Semarang, then road. Salatiga: about 1–1.5 hours from Semarang by road. Banda Neira: fly to Ambon, then a ferry or a long boat crossing. Tomohon: about 1 hour by road from Manado.

For Bali–Lombok–Gili legs, fast boats are common but cancel in swell; keep the last night near the airport before an international flight.
