Bali Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS): visitor guide

Ngurah Rai sits on the isthmus between Kuta and Jimbaran, about 4 km south of Kuta and roughly 13 km from Denpasar. The international and domestic terminals are separate buildings a short walk apart, with the international terminal handling most long-haul arrivals.

Both terminals are compact by major-airport standards: immigration, baggage and customs are usually cleared within 30–60 minutes of landing outside peak periods, and longer when several wide-body flights land together in the late afternoon and evening. The arrivals hall opens straight onto the transport counters and the car park, so you are outside within minutes of collecting bags.

Facilities are basic but adequate: currency exchange and ATMs in arrivals, SIM-card counters, cafés and a few restaurants airside, and paid lounges in the international terminal. There is no train or metro link — every trip into Bali is by road.

There is no rail or metro connection, so your choice is taxi, app car, pre-booked transfer or, for the very cheap, a public bus toward Denpasar. Which one is best depends on where you sleep: Kuta and Legian are minutes away, Seminyak and Canggu 30–60 minutes, Sanur 30–45 minutes, Ubud 1.5–2 hours.

Official airport taxis are booked at a counter inside arrivals and paid at the counter or to the driver; agree the price or confirm the meter before you set off. App cars (Grab, Gojek) are usually cheaper but some Bali zones restrict app pickups, so you may be asked to walk to a designated pickup point outside the airport grounds. Pre-booked private transfers cost more but include a name board and a fixed price, which is the easiest option for a first arrival or a late-night landing.

Traffic is the real variable. The bypass and toll road help for Ubud and Sanur, but the Kuta–Seminyak corridor jams from mid-afternoon into the evening, and the whole island slows during Nyepi and the Lebaran period.

Ngurah Rai handles night flights routinely, and taxis plus app cars operate around the clock, so a 01:00 landing is manageable. The public bus does not run overnight, and currency counters and SIM stalls may be closed or thinly staffed after midnight.

Two practical points. First, if you land after about 22:00, pre-book a transfer or confirm your hotel has a 24-hour desk — arriving at a locked guesthouse in Ubud at 02:00 is a common and avoidable problem. Second, change only a small amount of cash at the airport if counters are shut; ATMs in arrivals usually work, and rates in Kuta and Seminyak are better in daylight.

If you are connecting to the Gili islands or Nusa Penida the next morning, sleep near the airport or in Sanur rather than Ubud; the fast-boat piers are on the east and south coasts and the drive from Ubud adds two hours.

The international terminal has paid lounges that accept walk-in guests as well as business-class and priority-pass holders; access rules, opening hours and prices change, so check on arrival or with your card provider before you fly (check).

If you are not eligible for a lounge, the airside cafés and seating are serviceable but busy at peak departure times. Arriving 2.5–3 hours before an international flight gives you time to clear immigration and still sit down; on Friday and Sunday evenings, add another hour.

International and local rental brands have desks at the airport, and picking up on arrival is convenient if you are driving straight to Ubud, Amed or the north coast. Rates start around Rp300,000 a day for a small car, plus fuel and any insurance excess (2026 estimate, check).

You need a valid home licence plus an International Driving Permit to drive legally in Indonesia, and Bali traffic — scooters, narrow lanes, one-way systems — is not a gentle introduction. Many travellers instead hire a car with a driver for Rp600,000–900,000 a day, which covers fuel and parking and removes the licence question. Scooter rental is widely available but only for riders with a motorcycle licence and IDP; police fine unlicensed riders, and Bali has discussed restricting foreign scooter rentals, so check current rules.
