How we chose
We ranked bases on four things: how easy they are to reach from a main airport, whether the water is safe for the average swimmer, how much there is to do when the sea is rough, and whether the season fits a normal April–October trip.
We left out beaches that need a liveaboard or a private charter, and places where the only practical access is a long, weather-dependent crossing. We also favoured bases with a range of accommodation, so a family and a surfer can use the same pick.
Prices and crossing times are 2026 estimates; check with the operator before you book, because fast-boat schedules change with the swell.
Best time
Most of Indonesia has a dry season from April to October and a wet season from November to March. On Bali, Lombok and the Gilis, the dry season brings lighter wind, clearer water and calmer crossings; the wet season brings afternoon rain, more rubbish on some beaches and more cancelled boats.
Raja Ampat runs the other way: its best months are October to April, when the sea is calm and visibility is high. Komodo is good from April to November. If you are mixing regions, plan the trip around the region, not around Bali's calendar.
Nyepi, Bali's day of silence, closes the whole island for 24 hours, including the airport. Do not schedule a flight on Nyepi; check the date before you book.

Getting there
Most trips start at Bali Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS). From there, the south Bali beaches are 20–60 minutes by car; Sanur and Nusa Dua are closest, Uluwatu and Bingin the furthest. Use a metered app or a pre-booked transfer.
For the islands, fast boats leave from Sanur to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, and from Padang Bai or Serangan to the Gilis and Lombok. Crossings take 30 minutes to 2.5 hours and are weather-dependent; keep a buffer night near DPS before an international flight.
For Lombok, Komodo, Belitung and Raja Ampat, fly. Domestic fares vary widely and are cheapest booked a few weeks ahead. Trains work well on Java but not for the beach islands.
