When to go
Most of Indonesia has a dry season from April to October and a wet season from November to March. Java, Bali and Lombok hikes are best Apr–Oct: drier trails, clearer sunrises and fewer leeches. Raja Ampat and parts of Papua flip the pattern, with the calmest seas and best visibility Oct–Apr.
Volcano sunrises are cold and windy at 2,000–3,700 m; bring a layer even in the dry season. Rain does not always close a trail, but it can cancel a boat or make a crater rim unsafe. Check the day before, not a month ahead.

Getting there
Fly between islands; Java has usable trains, and everywhere else you hire a driver to the trailhead. For Bromo and Ijen, most travellers base in Malang or Probolinggo and Banyuwangi, or join a tour from Yogyakarta. For Batur, stay in Ubud and take a pre-dawn pickup. For Rinjani, start from Senaru or Sembalun on Lombok. For Komodo, fly to Labuan Bajo and book a boat there. For Lake Toba, fly to Medan then drive to Parapat.
