State museums and relic sites in Hanoi generally charge a small entry fee and close one day a week, often Monday — check. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the exception: it opens only in the morning, is closed on some days, and closes for a period each year for maintenance — check before you build a day around it.
The Old Quarter, Hoàn Kiếm lake, the railway street area and the markets are open all day and cost nothing. Water puppet performances run several times each evening; buy tickets at the theatre or through a tour operator.

Getting there
Most visitors arrive at Nội Bài airport, north of the centre. A metered taxi or ride-hailing car to the Old Quarter is the usual choice; the trip takes longer in peak traffic and the fare varies by operator and route — check the app or the meter before you set off. A public bus is far cheaper but slower with luggage.
Trains from the north and south arrive at Ga Hà Nội, a short ride or a walk from the Old Quarter. Sleeper buses from Sa Pa, Ninh Bình and Hạ Long usually drop passengers near the Old Quarter or at a bus station on the edge of the city.
Within the centre, walk. Distances between the lake, the Old Quarter and the French Quarter are small, and the pavements are the main obstacle rather than the distance.
