Tips
Start early. The Old Quarter between 6 and 9am is a different city from the same streets at 5pm: fewer motorbikes, open breakfast stalls, and the lake path at its best. Use the middle of the day for indoor or shaded sights, and take a real break around 2pm — Hanoi heat and humidity in May to September will otherwise end your day by 4pm.
Crossing the road is the one skill worth learning. Walk at a steady pace, do not stop or sprint, and let the motorbikes flow around you. If that is not for you, use Grab for anything over 1.5 km; it is cheap and removes the negotiation.
- Carry small notes: many ticket desks and street stalls cannot break a 500,000 VND note.
- Dress for temples: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the inner shrine.
- Keep the water puppet show as a wet-weather or tired-evening backup rather than a fixed plan.
- If your one day falls on a Monday, assume museums are shut and build the day around the lake, Old Quarter and pagodas.

Getting there and around
Hanoi's Old Quarter and lake district are walkable, and most visitors stay inside that ring. For longer hops, Grab (car or bike) is the default and is usually cheaper than a metered taxi; agree the meter or the app price before you set off. Public buses cover the city but are slow for a one-day plan and need exact change or a card — see the transport page for ticketing.
From Nội Bài Airport, the drive to the Old Quarter is roughly 30–45 km depending on route and typically 40–60 minutes outside peak hours. Allow more in the 7–9am and 5–7pm windows. If you are moving on tomorrow, book onward transport the day before rather than on the morning.
