Hanoi itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days

Hanoi rewards slow walking more than checklist ticking. The Old Quarter is a dense grid of streets where the day's plan is really a loop: lake, market, a bowl of pho, a temple, coffee, then the next lake. Two full days is the point where you stop rushing and start noticing.

One day works if Hanoi is a stopover before Ha Long or a flight south. You will see the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and one major sight, and you will leave things undone. Three days lets you add the Mausoleum complex, the Temple of Literature and a half-day out at the Museum of Ethnology or Bat Trang, or swap day three for Ninh Binh.

If you are following the country plan, Hanoi is listed at 3-4 nights as the northern base for Ha Long and Ninh Binh. Treat the itineraries below as full days, not calendar days: arrival and departure days are usually half-days once you count the airport run.

Start early, before the heat and the motorbikes peak. Walk the Old Quarter's craft streets, then loop Hoan Kiem Lake and cross the red Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple. The lake is the city's living room: locals exercise at dawn and teenagers gather after dark.

Mid-morning, pick one museum rather than three. The Vietnamese Women's Museum and the Hoa Lo Prison site are both compact and close to the centre. After lunch, walk to St Joseph's Cathedral and the surrounding cafe streets, then rest through the hottest hours.

In the late afternoon, head to the Long Bien Bridge for the view back over the river, or stay around the lake. Evening is for a water puppet show at the Thang Long theatre near Hoan Kiem, then dinner: bun cha, pho or a bia hoi corner. Most of this day is on foot, with a Grab ride only if you run out of energy.

Go north first. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Presidential Palace area sit together in Ba Dinh, about 2 km from the Old Quarter. The Mausoleum is a morning-only visit with a dress code: shoulders and knees covered, no photography inside, and a quiet, single-file walk past the body. It closes on some weekdays, so confirm before you build the day around it.

From Ba Dinh, walk or ride south to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university, then continue to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long if you still have appetite for history. Lunch near Van Mieu is cheap and local.

Spend the afternoon around West Lake: Tran Quoc Pagoda on its small peninsula, then coffee on the water. If the weather is good, this is the best sunset side of the city. Finish with dinner in Tay Ho or back in the Old Quarter.

Ninh Binh is the strongest day trip from Hanoi: karst hills, rowing boats through cave systems and rice fields, about 2 hours each way by road or train. A day trip means an early start and a late return, and you see one or two sites rather than the whole area. If you would rather stay in the city, use day three for the Museum of Ethnology, a cooking class, or a half-day to Bat Trang ceramics village across the river. This is also the day to fix anything you missed: the Fine Arts Museum, a longer cafe morning, or the weekend night market if your dates line up.

Ha Long and Lan Ha bays are the other classic add-on, but they need at least one night aboard, so they belong in a 3-4 night Hanoi stay rather than a single day. Hai Phong is the port gateway if you are heading to Cat Ba.

Hanoi is cheap by US or European standards if you eat where locals eat. Street bowls and bia hoi keep the food bill low; sit-down restaurants and rooftop bars push it up quickly. Museum and temple tickets are small but rarely free, and the Mausoleum is free with a queue.

Transport inside the city is the smallest line: walking is often fastest in the Old Quarter, and short Grab rides cost a few dollars. The big variable is day trips, where a private car costs many times a group tour or the train. Prices below are 2026 estimates; confirm at the counter.

Build the day around heat and traffic. Mornings are for the big outdoor sights, early afternoons for museums or a rest, late afternoons and evenings for the lakes and food. Cross streets at a steady pace; motorbikes flow around pedestrians rather than stopping.

Book the water puppet show and any Ha Long cruise a day or two ahead in high season. Carry small notes for tickets and markets. A local eSIM makes maps and ride-hailing simple, and most cafes have wifi if you need a backup.

Check the calendar: during Tet, many shops and some sights close for several days and transport fills up. Weekends bring the walking-street closure around Hoan Kiem Lake, which is pleasant but changes taxi routes.
