Best tours in Hanoi: walking, food and day tours

Hanoi rewards walking, not riding. The Old Quarter, Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the French Quarter sit inside a 3 km band, so a guided walk covers more ground than a bus and lets you stop for bún chả or cà phê trứng when you want. Use a tour for the first morning to learn the street layout and the food vocabulary, then go unguided.

For day trips, the two that justify the hours are Ninh Bình (karst, rowing boats, about 2 h each way) and Hạ Long Bay (limestone islands, 2.5–3 h each way). Both are long days; the overnight cruise version is the one worth booking in advance. Cooking classes and small food walks are the other category where a guide adds real value, because they get you into kitchens and stalls you would otherwise walk past.

Walking and food tours run morning (08:00–11:30), afternoon (14:00–17:30) and evening (17:30–21:00). Morning is cooler and the markets are busiest; evening is better for street food because the grills are lit. Day tours to Ninh Bình and Hạ Long leave between 07:00 and 08:30 and return 18:00–20:00, so treat them as a full day and do not plan a night bus the same evening.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a standard small-group product. Private guides cost roughly two to three times a group seat. Hotel desks and Old Quarter travel shops often add a commission; booking direct with the operator or through a reputable platform usually costs less for the same itinerary.

Most walking and food tours meet at a fixed point near Hoàn Kiếm Lake or at your Old Quarter hotel; confirm the meeting point in writing the day before, because Old Quarter street numbers repeat across districts. Day tours usually include hotel pickup inside the Old Quarter and Hoàn Kiếm; hotels outside that ring (Tây Hồ, Ba Đình) may be charged extra or asked to meet at the operator's office.

For Ninh Bình, the road takes about 2 h each way; for Hạ Long, 2.5–3 h each way, longer on Friday and Sunday evenings when Hanoians leave the city. If you would rather travel independently, trains and buses run to Ninh Bình and Hạ Long, but you then arrange local transport at the far end, which is where a day tour saves time.

Read what the price includes. Many cheap day tours exclude entry tickets, lunch drinks and the boat at Tràng An, which adds up on the day. For Hạ Long, check the boat class and whether kayaking is included; the cheapest overnight cruises cut the bay time and spend more of the day on the road.

Group size is the other lever. A 25-seat bus to Ninh Bình means queues at every stop; a 9–12 seat van moves faster and costs a little more. For food tours, ask how many tastings and whether drinks are included. If you have allergies or eat vegetarian, message the operator before booking rather than on the day.

Finally, match the tour to your trip length. If you only have two or three days in Hanoi, one walking tour plus one day trip is enough; do not fill every morning with guided time and leave none for the city itself.
