Best day trips from Gold Coast: how to get there and what to see

The Gold Coast sits between rainforest hills and the sea, so the day-trip menu splits into three groups: the hinterland behind the city, Brisbane to the north, and the northern New South Wales coast or K'gari to the south and north. Pick by how far you are willing to drive and whether you want a beach, a rainforest walk or a city.

Distances and times below are road times in normal traffic. In summer and on school holidays, add 20–30 minutes on the Pacific Motorway.

The hinterland is the strongest day trip from the Gold Coast because it is close, cheap and different from the beach. Springbrook National Park has the Natural Bridge, a rock arch with a waterfall and glow-worm colony, plus lookouts over the coast. Tamborine Mountain is the easiest of the three: a plateau village with galleries, wineries, a rainforest skywalk and short walks. Lamington National Park, reached via Binna Burra or O'Reilly's, is the biggest and quietest, with longer walks and cooler air.

All three need a car unless you book a tour. Roads are winding and can be foggy; drive carefully and allow more time than the map suggests. Walks range from 20 minutes to several hours, so bring water, a rain jacket and proper shoes.

Brisbane is about an hour north by train or car and makes a simple city day: the river, South Bank, the museums and the Queen Street Mall. Trains run frequently from Gold Coast stations, so this is the one big day trip you can do without a car. Check the current timetable and fare before you go.

Closer to home, the Broadwater and South Stradbroke Island are half-day options by boat or ferry, and the Spit and Main Beach are a short drive from most of the coast.

Byron Bay is about 1.5–2 hours south by car, past the Tweed and through northern New South Wales. It is doable as a day trip but the drive eats the day; an overnight is better if you want the lighthouse walk, the beaches and the town without rushing. Tours run from the Gold Coast, which removes the driving.

K'gari (Fraser Island) is much further north, near Hervey Bay, and is a 4WD sand island. Day tours from the Gold Coast exist but involve very long transfers; most travellers do it as an overnight from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach instead.

The hinterland national parks are free to enter; you pay only for fuel and any tour. Brisbane is a train fare each way. Byron Bay and K'gari are the expensive options once you add fuel, tours or an overnight. Prices below are 2026 estimates and change; check before booking.
