Where to stay in Gold Coast: best neighborhoods and hotels

Gold Coast is a 40 km strip of beach towns, not one city centre, so where you sleep decides how you spend the day. The tram (G:link) links Helensvale, Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach; everything south of Broadbeach — Mermaid, Burleigh, Currumbin, Coolangatta — is bus or car territory.

If you have three nights and no car, base in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach. If you are here for the surf, cafés and a slower pace, Burleigh Heads is the better stay. If you fly out early, Coolangatta removes the transfer.

Surfers Paradise is the postcard strip: high-rises, the beach across the road, and the densest cluster of hostels, hotels and apartments. It is loud at night and busy in January, but you can walk to dinner, the beach and the tram. Good for a first visit or a short stop.

Broadbeach, two tram stops south, has the same beach with a calmer evening: restaurants around Kurrawa Park, the convention centre, and family apartments. It suits families and anyone who wants a kitchen.

Burleigh Heads is the local favourite. The headland national park walk starts at the beach, the cafés along James Street are a short walk inland, and the surf break is one of the coast's best-known. Fewer high-rises, more character, no tram.

Coolangatta and Tweed Heads sit at the southern end, minutes from Gold Coast Airport. The beach is calm and patrolled, the pace is slow, and you trade nightlife for an easy departure morning.

Southport and Main Beach are the practical middle: cheaper rooms, the Broadwater, and Sea World nearby. Labrador and Runaway Bay are further north and quieter, with the Broadwater on one side.

Prices swing hard with the school calendar. Queensland school holidays and the mid-December to late-January peak are the expensive weeks; May to August and late February are the cheapest. All figures are 2026 estimates for a double room per night.

Apartments with a kitchen often beat hotels for stays of four nights or more, and parking is usually included outside Surfers Paradise. Hostel dorms are concentrated in Surfers Paradise. Expect a nightly parking fee of A$10–25 at Surfers Paradise hotels.

Decide by transport first. If you will not rent a car, stay within walking distance of the tram or a frequent bus route; the coast is long and taxis add up.

Book December and January two to three months ahead, and check whether your dates fall in Queensland school holidays. Outside those weeks you can often book a few days out and still find rooms.

Ask about the view and floor: 'ocean view' in Surfers Paradise can mean a sliver between towers. Beachfront usually means a road between you and the sand.

If you are arriving late, check the airport transfer options before choosing a southern suburb; a cheap room far south can cost more in transfers than it saves.
