Gold Coast airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Gold Coast Airport (OOL) sits at Coolangatta, about 25 km south of Surfers Paradise. The train is the default for most travellers: the station is a short walk from the terminal, trains run north along the coast, and a one-way fare to the Surfers Paradise area is around A$10–15 (2026 estimate).

A taxi or rideshare is the choice when you land late, carry surfboards or several bags, or stay somewhere off the rail line. Expect A$60–90 to Surfers Paradise (2026 estimate) and 25–35 minutes off-peak. The bus and the G:link tram cover the same corridor more cheaply but with a change and more stops.

The airport has its own station on the Gold Coast line, a few minutes' walk from the terminal across the road. Trains run north towards Helensvale and Brisbane, stopping at Robina, Nerang and Helensvale, where you change for the G:link tram to Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Southport. Frequency is roughly every 15–30 minutes through the day and less often at night (check the timetable for your arrival).

Fares are distance-based and paid by tapping a contactless card or phone at the gate; there are no paper tickets. A trip into the Surfers Paradise area is around A$10–15 (2026 estimate). If you are staying in Coolangatta or Tweed Heads, the airport is close enough to walk or take a short taxi instead.

Local buses connect the airport with the coastal strip. Route 777 is the usual link to Broadbeach, where you can join the G:link tram north to Surfers Paradise and Southport. The whole trip costs a few dollars (2026 estimate) and takes about 50–70 minutes depending on traffic and connections.

The G:link tram itself is a fast, frequent way to move between Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise and Southport once you are in the city. Tap on and off with the same card or phone you used on the train. Buses and trams are step-free, which helps with luggage, but avoid the morning and afternoon school runs if you can.

Taxis wait outside the terminal and rideshare pick-up points are signposted nearby. To Surfers Paradise the meter usually lands between A$60 and A$90 (2026 estimate); Broadbeach and Coolangatta are cheaper, Brisbane is much more. Off-peak the drive is 25–35 minutes, but the Pacific Motorway can double that on a Friday afternoon or a holiday weekend.

Rideshare apps work normally at OOL, though surge pricing after late flights is common. If your flight lands after the last train, book a taxi or rideshare rather than waiting. Airport and toll surcharges apply on some routes; the driver should show them on the meter or in the app.

Rental desks sit in and around the terminal. A car makes sense if you plan to visit the hinterland, Springbrook or Byron Bay, but not if you are staying in Surfers Paradise, where parking runs A$15–30 a day (2026 estimate) and traffic is heavy in summer. Rental rates start around A$50–100 a day (2026 estimate), with one-way fees if you drop the car elsewhere.

The drive north follows the Pacific Motorway and is easy outside peak hours. Fuel is around A$2 a litre (2026 estimate). Watch for kangaroos at dusk on hinterland roads, and check your contract for unsealed-road exclusions if you plan to explore the national parks.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for one adult, one way. Children and concession fares are lower on public transport; taxis charge the same per car, so a group of three or four often pays less per person by taxi than by train.
