Give it 3–4 nights: 2 beach days (Surfers or Burleigh), 1 theme-park day, 1 hinterland or Currumbin day. Skip it entirely if you want quiet — the strip is high-rise.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.
The Gold Coast is a 35 km strip of beach suburbs south of Brisbane, with 52 km of patrolled ocean beaches, a light-rail spine and Australia's densest cluster of theme parks. It is a beach-and-parks city, not a sightseeing city: pick one suburb to sleep in, use the tram and buses, and treat the hinterland as a separate day.

Getting around
Translink runs the trains, buses and the G:Link tram. The L1 tram links Helensvale (train to Brisbane) with Southport, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads, every 15 min or better from about 05:00 to midnight on weekdays and 24 h at weekends. A flat 50c fare applies per journey on tram, bus and train with up to 3 transfers (check current terms); touch on and off with a contactless card, phone or go card. Buses cover the coast and theme parks but are less frequent off the main beach strip. Taxi OOL to Surfers is about A$55; rideshare is usually cheaper. A car only pays off for the hinterland or a multi-park day.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Gold Coast Hinterland (Springbrook and Numinbah Valley)
goDoor to door: 1–1.5 h each way
Car, about 45–60 min from the coast to Springbrook; no useful public transport to the trailheads
Rainforest walks and lookouts; go early, take water, and drive back before dark.
Brisbane
goDoor to door: 1.5–2 h
Train from Helensvale, Nerang or Robina to Brisbane Central, just over 1 h, half-hourly
Easy day out for museums, the river and South Bank; the flat fare makes it cheap.
Tweed Heads and Coolangatta
goDoor to door: 45–75 min
Bus or tram to Burleigh Heads then bus south, or drive 30–40 min
You cross into New South Wales; Snapper Rocks and Rainbow Bay are the surf landmarks.
South Stradbroke Island
cautionDoor to door: 1–2 h
Boat or ferry from the Broadwater; no car access
Remote, largely unpatrolled beaches; only with a boat or organised cruise.
Eat & sleep
Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Surfers Paradise
Highest concentration of hotels, hostels and nightlife; beach across the road. Noisy at night, busiest in Schoolies week (late Nov).
Broadbeach
Quieter than Surfers, tram stop, casino, two shopping centres and a big restaurant strip. Good for couples and families who still want walkable evenings.
Burleigh Heads
Southern end of the tram line; national park headland, cafés and the best surf-watching. Best pick if you want a local feel and don't mind being 20–30 min from the theme parks.
Main Beach
Upmarket high-rises and resorts north of Surfers, close to Sea World and the Spit. Fewer cheap eats.
Southport
Commercial centre with hospitals, shops and the Australia Fair area; cheaper beds and good tram links, but not a beach-holiday setting.
Currumbin and Coolangatta
Family and residential, closest to OOL airport; Currumbin Creek lagoon is calm water for kids.

Watch out
Safety
- Swim between the red and yellow flags: the surf has rips, and unpatrolled beaches (including much of the Tweed end) are not for weak swimmers.
- Late November is Schoolies week — Surfers Paradise fills with school-leavers and accommodation prices spike.
- Summer afternoon storms are short and intense; plan indoor backup for Dec–Feb.
- Travelling without a valid fare can draw a fine (about A$261 (≈ US$180), check).
- Gold Coast Airport closes overnight, so an early flight means a pre-dawn taxi or shuttle, not a terminal nap.
