The Gold Coast is a 35 km strip of beach suburbs south of Brisbane, with 52 km of patrolled ocean beaches, a light-rail spine and Australia's densest cluster of theme parks. It is a beach-and-parks city, not a sightseeing city: pick one suburb to sleep in, use the tram and buses, and treat the hinterland as a separate day.

- About 30 min drive to Surfers Paradise; bus 777 runs every 15 min to the Burleigh Heads tram stop. The terminal closes overnight — do not plan to sleep there before an early flight.

- Bigger international gateway; about 80 min by car, or train to Helensvale then tram. Airtrain to/from Brisbane Airport is the one fare that is not the flat 50c.

- Highest concentration of hotels, hostels and nightlife; beach across the road. Noisy at night, busiest in Schoolies week (late Nov).
- Broadbeach
- Quieter than Surfers, tram stop, casino, two shopping centres and a big restaurant strip. Good for couples and families who still want walkable evenings.
- Burleigh Heads
- Southern end of the tram line; national park headland, cafés and the best surf-watching. Best pick if you want a local feel and don't mind being 20–30 min from the theme parks.
- Main Beach
- Upmarket high-rises and resorts north of Surfers, close to Sea World and the Spit. Fewer cheap eats.
- Southport
- Commercial centre with hospitals, shops and the Australia Fair area; cheaper beds and good tram links, but not a beach-holiday setting.
- Currumbin and Coolangatta
- Family and residential, closest to OOL airport; Currumbin Creek lagoon is calm water for kids.

Scams and watch-outs
- Swim between the red and yellow flags: the surf has rips, and unpatrolled beaches (including much of the Tweed end) are not for weak swimmers.
- Late November is Schoolies week — Surfers Paradise fills with school-leavers and accommodation prices spike.
- Summer afternoon storms are short and intense; plan indoor backup for Dec–Feb.
- Travelling without a valid fare can draw a fine (about A$261, check).
- Gold Coast Airport closes overnight, so an early flight means a pre-dawn taxi or shuttle, not a terminal nap.
Generally safe, with beach and nightlife as the real risks: swim between the flags, keep valuables off the sand, and watch your drink in Surfers Paradise bars. Petty theft from cars and beach bags is the most common issue.
