Gökçeada is Turkey's largest island and its westernmost point, a windswept, hilly Aegean island at the mouth of the Dardanelles. It was Greek until 1923 and its old villages — Bademli, Kaleköy, Zeytinli, Tepeköy, Dereköy — are the reason to come. There is no air service: you arrive by ferry from Kabatepe on the Gallipoli peninsula, and you need a car, a bike or patience with minibuses to see it.

Getting around

Minibuses run from Merkez several times a day to Kuzu Limanı, every couple of hours to Yenibademli and Kaleköy, and only once or twice a day south to Eşelek and Aydıncık or west to Dereköy and Uğurlu. There is no minibus to Zeytinli or Tepeköy. Bike hire exists in Merkez; taxis are few and expensive. In winter the roads are near-empty, so a rental car is the practical answer.

Watch out

Safety

Crime is uncommon and the island feels calm; the real risks are the sun, the wind that cancels ferries, cash-only businesses, military zones and pick-up trucks on the village lanes.
  • Cash only in many places, including some accommodation: carry extra lira, and do not rely on the ATMs or the ferries working smoothly.
  • The sea breeze hides strong sun; you burn faster than you think.
  • Goats will eat any loose food, including at campsites.
  • Military areas are fenced and clearly marked: stay out.
  • Strong wind cancels ferries, especially in winter and on the summer Çanakkale waterbus.
